Welcome to Fall

Welcome to Fall

I have just spent a week in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The foliage was just starting to turn into a wonderful koliascope of colors. Unseasonably warm then while there, we are now getting back to the usual temperatures of October. The gardens are wilting down, the skins on the tomatoes are thicker, canning and freezing are in full operation. Corn stalks are turning brown in the fields, and as the leaves die back, acres of bright orange pumpkins are evident against the backdrop of browning leaves. Sumacs along the edge of the swamps are bright red and are probably the earliest of the changing season.
The tree leaves, although still changing color here, are starting to drop. They go in stages. Most noticeable are the maples as they seem to go overnight. The oaks, that are most abundant in this area, go more slowly. Many do not lose all of their leaves over the fall but wait for spring and new growth. All I really know is that by Thanksgiving I will be knee deep in leaves and thanking God for leaf blowers.

Right now the houses on the street are slowly starting to sport scarecrows, orange lights, pumpkins, and corn stalks. Soon the neighborhood children will be buying and making costumes for trick-or-treating. I’m stocking up on candy bars as there will be about one hundred little ones knocking at my door. Some not so little ones, too. I chuckle at the less than one-year-olds that come in their parents’ arms, knowing full well that these babe-in-arms will get none of the bounties.

It is a wonderful time of year. With a chill in the air, it is a great time for walking and hiking. Despite a year with a heavy infestation of gypsy moths, the oak trees have put out an abundance of acorns. That means that with this bounty the squirrels will have been just as busy reproducing large litters. That may mean a problem for next year. If the season does not provide for the newcomers, then the population of squirrels will dwindle again. They come and go from year to year.

It’s the time of year that I start looking towards my own Halloween decorating. I don’t do a lot, but do enjoy carving pumpkins. Choosing from a collection of patterns that were collected over the years, I pick them based on available time and the effort required to do the work. There is a ghost that hangs from a tree to welcome the kids with a cackle. Using white paper bags and black silhouettes, luminaria lines the walk up to the front door. The advent of flickering battery operated lights take away the danger of flames in the pumpkins and luminaria. Other smaller lights and decorations are brought out of storage. The costume for the dog involves a bandana and motorcycle hat. My own costume comes from a collection in that same storage area and varies from year to year. With a motorcycle dog, then a motorcycle Mama may end up being the choice.

Not a big fan of roasted pumpkin seeds, when the guts are pulled from the pumpkins, I put the collection in a large shallow roasting pan. This pan is placed on a storage box on the deck just outside of the living room window. From my recliner, I am privy to a private show of the squirrels coming up to feed on them. It keeps them out of the bird feeders. The biggest male always stakes his claim on the pan of seeds, chasing away all others. Somehow that just doesn’t seem fair.

The Anthracite Deluxe Is A Stylish Addition To Our Range

A generously-specified concrete garage

If you need any proof that the best concrete garages are never ‘just’ concrete garages, you only need to look at the Anthracite Deluxe garage. It’s brand new for 2017, and incorporates all of the features you would expect from a sophisticated concrete garage in 2017.

Eye-catching and useful features of the Anthracite Deluxe include an anthracite horizontal ribbed Hormann up and over main door with four-point locking, as well as a 4’ wide anthracite PVCu fixed window, 3’ steel anthracite personnel access door with multi-point locking as standard, and even stylish anthracite hand pointed real brick front posts. You can also expect attractive PVCu fascias and vergeboards, once again in glorious anthracite.

The Anthracite Deluxe is not just one shape or model of garage, though – it’s actually a complete range of concrete garages, with various styles from which to select in accordance with your needs. If you go for an Apex garage, for instance, it will also incorporate blue/black coloured fibre cement roof sheets, as well as eaves filler that helps to keep out dust and leaves. Go for a Pent Mansard model instead, though, and charcoal coloured pantile profile tile effect roof sheets will be used to the front elevation.

Nor is there a lack of scope for customisation with this concrete garage, as the roof sheets on both the Apex and Mansard models can be specified in various standard colours. The Anthracite Deluxe Is A Stylish Addition To Our Range

When it comes to concrete garages, you don’t need to consider any other company

No Birmingham or West Midlands homeowner has just one or more priorities for their new concrete garage. They don’t ‘just’ want it to look good or to keep their vehicle safe – they want it to tick all of the obvious boxes and often a lot more.

So don’t take any chances with your choice of company to supply you with a concrete garage. Opt for Betta Buildings, and you will have the peace of mind of knowing that both supply and installation are taken care of, by a company that has longstanding industry experience and an exceptional reputation throughout the Birmingham and West Midlands area.

Why Do You Need Life Insurance

Why Do You Need Life Insurance

It’s hard to talk about death, especially when it involves people you love. Conversation about death really needs to happen if there is no delayed concern about health problems or when age is not a factor. This is something you should talk about openly, and do it when you’re young. There are a few things you want to consider when you are planning together. You want to have the will to make sure that the issue is handled as you see fit. Another area to consider is life insurance in Greenville, SC, or with companies in your area. There are many reasons why you should have life insurance. It’s important to protect your family, maybe your business, and maybe leave a legacy.

Reasons You Should Consider Life Insurance Why Do You Need Life Insurance

You really never know what the future holds for you. Every day, anytime, you can be involved in a fatal accident, an unexpected illness, or die of natural causes. Life insurance is a way to help your family and loved ones face the financial burden that may be caused by your death. Emotional worries are great, and the last thing you want to add is extra worry about how to pay mortgages, principal bills, tuition, and other expenses. Life insurance benefits can also help pay for housing taxes. Nothing will bring you back, but at least you can make it easier for the people you leave behind.
You never want to make the assumption that your family will bounce back after you die. It is possible that living parents may want to take time to work to care for children, especially after a tragic loss. You also do not want to plan a couple to remarry. You might think it could happen, but it should not be part of the financial plan. You want to do your best to let your family in a situation of having enough, through life insurance allowances, to provide the lifestyle you want them to lead. It’s important to work with a financial planner to evaluate your goals and find the best figure for your situation.
Death should not mean that your family is in debt to survive. Funerals are expensive events and choices that can be an add on when emotions are high. Life insurance can cover these costs as well as other expenses. You do not want to add to the burden they already feel with accumulated debt immediately. Why Do You Need Life Insurance
It is important to buy your life insurance at a younger age, when your health is at its best. Once you have your policy protected even if you suddenly find you have cancer or other conditions that might prevent you from getting protection. In other words, you lock your inability when you are most healthy. Many futures policies will also come with the option to change all life later on in the life of the policy. This is very valuable, because the whole life policy allows you to maintain your lifetime insurance and also creates a tax-free cash value and can even be used as a channel for pensions.

Why Do You Need Life Insurance

When you are young, you may think that you do not need life insurance in Greenville, SC, or wherever you live. You will want to take the time to evaluate what your family will do if tomorrow you do not come home. This is the thing that is responsible for doing, and although this may be a difficult discussion, it is one of the things you need to have.

For Love Key: The History of the Waters

For Love Key: The History of the Waters

As a barge cruiser, the canal system is a complicated and balanced engineering feat. The keystone that supports this water channel is key. Whether run by key owners, followed up by barge owners, or controlled automatically by computer, the key allows fast and easy barge passage through the countryside. Without this engineering miracle, the canal trip is simply not possible. So, how is the key found and what exactly does it do?
When and Why Are They Invented? For Love Key: The History of the Waters

Rivers have long served as important trade and communication networks. However, this network is limited because the ship can not travel deep inland and it is very difficult to travel up through the river. The key, the invention that allowed the ship to gain or lose altitude, was developed by the Chinese in the tenth century and by the Dutch on the thirteenth. The initial “pound” key focuses on filling and drying small sized rooms, and facilitating the construction of the first independent waterway – or canal – that causes worldwide trade expansion. This arrangement also helps ships travel up or down in the domesticated rivers like the Thames.

This centuries-old invention is used today in some of the most important global trade routes – the Panama Canal, for example – and also allows for more relaxed travel, such as barge cruises. For Love Key: The History of the Waters

How do they work?

As we know, this technical miracle is designed to help boats upstream or downstream. If a ship wants to travel upstream, first the bottom gate should be opened so as to let the key drain. Next, the bottom door opened, and the boat could enter the room. After the gates of the lower and lower gates of the water gate are closed, the gate of the upper water door is opened, the water flows in and the water level rises. The boat is gently lifted to the next level and the top door can be opened safely, so the ship can continue its journey. Once again the same process occurs, but vice versa.

Getting Technical: Flights and Ladders

Engineers working with channels often have to cope with sudden changes. This can often not be handled with a single key, leading to a common feature of a channel called ‘flight’. This term refers to a group of 30 keys adjacent to each other, but with a sufficiently wide range between allowing the ship to pass each other. They gradually raise or lower the barge to the appropriate level. Since each room uses water from the above, the flight uses the same amount of water as a single key.

The more popular setting is the stairs; Here the top gate of one room acts as the lower gate above. To help with this process, the side pool is used to adjust the level perfectly in the upper and lower spaces. Of course, the best way to appreciate this amazing engineering feat is from the gentle barge cruise deck.

TCS Architects, sibling design studio of Design Forum International designs and builds two multi-residence buildings in Delhi, both intended to reflect luxury with a green soul

“With a decreasing green cover in urban areas, craving for a green view and a connection to nature has become more intense, both for visual reasons as well as to create sufficient biomass to produce oxygen,” say Goonmeet Singh Chauhan and Anoj Tevatia, principal architects speaking of the design of their two recent projects – in Vasant Vihar and Greater Kailash, New Delhi. Retaining trees and shrubs on site, introducing planter balconies, terrace gardens and integrating existing trees into the overall spatial planning are solutions that they have diligently incorporated into both projects.

TCS Architects, sibling design studio of Design Forum International

The project in Greater Kailash has nature integrated right from the stilt level of parking, where a tiny green lawn facilitates not only recharging of the ground water table, but also becomes a breathing zone; further, fitted with outdoor seating, the area is thoughtfully converted into a communal space.

Setting a benchmark is this wheelchair-friendly building, where a step-free entrance is carved out whilst broad doorways ensure internal wheelchair-accessibility.

Green building features such as high performance double-glazed glass, use of dust-proof and sound-proof windows, 5-star rated air conditioning, exposed plumbing, water management, solar geysers etc., help conserve energy. Local materials such as exposed brick, contextually-appropriate Dholpur stone and a strong emphasis on natural light and cross ventilation anchors the project in sustainability.

In the Vasant Vihar project, the façade is an amalgamation of the modern and classical, where jaali is juxtaposed against stone panels – thereby softening the solidarity of form with detailing. The entry points proudly feature stone lanterns, serving as glorious sculptures during the day and diffused light by night. TCS Architects, sibling design studio of Design Forum International

Warmth of wood unifies the interiors viz. wall paneling and suspended ceiling panels, whilst mostly concealed and muted lighting creates a soothing ambience. Indoor lighting plays a supporting role to the natural infusion of light pouring in from floor-to-ceiling glazing.

The romance with nature continues unabated right into the master en-suite washroom, where the balcony abutting the toilet is designed as a tree pit, a tropical experience right into the washrooms. The interplay of vibrant greenery and polished Italian marble marries the urban aesthetics with eco-sensitivity.

Beyond Skiing: The Natural and Cultural Wonders of Chamonix

Attention, ski enthusiasts! Chamonix is renowned for its fantastic skiing – and for good reason! However, this means that its other wonderful attractions are frequently overlooked. You’ve just stepped off your shuttle from Geneva to Chamonix… now how about something a little different? For something distinctly non-touristy yet incredibly worthwhile, why not wander off the beaten skiing track and try some of these alternative activities?
Natural Highlights

Visit the Mer de Glace

At 200m deep, this is France’s largest glacier. It flows 7km down Mont Blanc’s northern side, moving at a rate of up to 1cm an hour or 90m per year. The ‘Sea of Ice’ is stunning to behold, and after the 430 steps that lead into the grotto, you’ll see some of the best crystal specimens in the Mont Blanc massif. It is reachable by the Train du Montenvers, a picturesque cog railway that will bring you to an altitude of 1913m, from where you can access the Grotte de Glace by cable car. The entry price also gains you access to the Glacorium, which examines the birth, life and future of glaciers – so hold on to your ticket!

Take the Cable Car to the Aiguille du Midi

Rising to 3842m at its peak, the Aiguille du Midi is perhaps Chamonix’s most noteworthy geographical feature. If the altitude doesn’t put you off, you’ll be rewarded with 360-degree panoramic views of the French, Italian and Swiss Alps, which will literally take your breath away.

You can take the cable car Téléphérique de l’Aiguille du Midi all year round, and the journey itself is quite spectacular. Either hop out halfway at Plan de l’Aiguille to begin hiking or paragliding, or continue to the top for views in every direction, thanks to the glass floor of the ‘Step into the Void’ attraction.

Be aware that even in summer, it will be only be about -10°C at the summit, while temperatures can plummet as low as -25°C in winter.
